The Vibe: Whisk Cake Creations is a small bakery on one of Alameda’s several retail blocks. It has a nondescript white and blue storefront and a couple tables and chairs out front.

There is no indoor seating, but the display case is sure to put a smile on your face right away.

Pre-ordering is recommended; it’s how I snagged both the full cakes I’ve had so far. Walk-ins may find a few whole cakes available, and maybe a slice or two, but cupcakes are more likely.

They offer chiffon cakes and “house” cakes, in six- and eight-inch sizes. And special orders, of course.
Whisk Cake Creations is only open a couple hours, a couple days a week (Thurs–Sun, 10:00am–2:00pm., at present). Plan your cake pick-up needs accordingly, though they do offer delivery.
Coffee is also available.
My Take on Whisk Cake Creations #
The Food: I first came across Whisk Cake Creations hearing about the publication of owner & baker Henry Awayan’s the Ube Baking Book. I am often mixed on ube as I sometimes find it too subtle a flavor—much subtler than its coloring, at least. So I tend to think it’s more of a gimmick. But the photos I saw of Awayan’s work were so appealing! I decided to try a Whisk Cake Creation for a holiday party I was throwing to see if it tasted as good as it looked.

I decided not to go with ube for my first taste of their cakes. Instead, I purchased a six-inch apple pie cake. The size is great for about six people, as each slice is quite tall. The apple-cinnamon interior was moist, the apples poached with great flavor, the salted caramel buttercream delicious, and the almond toffee crumble on top was denser and moister than I expected, just what the cake needed to give it added oomph. A great first introduction, for sure!
My next time at Whisk Cake Creations, I was hoping for just a slice or two of an ube-flavored cake to sample with a friend, so I’d have enough material for a review. But at that time, no slices were to be had, only cupcakes. So we got three of those to share. Our opinions of them varied widely. First, the least successful:

The red velvet cupcake was dry, and the frosting was not tangy in the way that I expect for red velvet. Pretty chocolate curls, though.

The chocolate truffle cupcake was satisfying for this chocolate lover, especially with that bonus squirt of creamy chocolate sauce inside. The swiss meringue buttercream was fun for a change. But the cake itself was a touch dry, though not as much as the red velvet.

The banana chip cupcake was our definite winner, and it’s one of Whisk Cake Creations’ unique flavors. The frosting was a nice level, not too much or too little in proportion to the cake. The crumb was moister than the other two, for sure, and the banana flavor came through. Of course, the slightly melted chocolate chips were a bonus!
I wasn’t satisfied judging Whisk Cake Creations solely on the apple pie cake and those cupcakes, however. So I decided I had to try their signature Ube Chiffon Cake to give a full review. And I’m glad I did.

That’s a six-inch pie and it burst with ube flavor. The chiffon cake was luxuriously moist, yet fluffy. Ube sprang out from the crumb, bavarian cream, and the jelly-like halaya rosettes. The coconut sprinkles and white chocolate crisps added texture to increase the fun. I could eat that whole cake quite happily. It’s rich but doesn’t weigh you down.
Would I Go Back? I wish the availability of slices was more dependable in the cafe, because I’d love to work my way through their cake flavors. Raspberry almond chiffon? Mocha chiffon? Ube Oreo cheesecake? Trying the banana chip as a full? That all sounds much more exciting than having a cupcake again. So rather than become a regular, I’ll keep Whisk Cake Creations in my back pocket for when I want to impress dinner guests. The cakes are absolutely worth it, but the cupcakes still need some perfecting.
