Wi-Fi: I’ve used the downtown Hayward Wi-Fi here with no problem. There are also multiple outlets under booths and near walls for powering up.
The Vibe: Con Azucar Café in Hayward is a new franchise store of the original Con Azucar in San Jose. The brand is known for blending Mexican and American coffee cultures and supplying giant conchas in their bakery case, at least at the original shop. I haven’t seen a giant one in Hayward yet, but there are some selections in the pastry case. I may just not have arrived early enough to see one in Hayward, as I’ve swung by in the afternoons.
This café is full of beautiful colors and artwork, including that swing meant for selfie taking—no actual swinging allowed. I quite like the Hayward-themed artwork at the far end of the seating area, too.
The green velvet booths and recent addition of a cactus wall make for an inviting spot to get some work done. The store is consistently busy, but most patrons don’t stay for long, so it’s easy for a laptop worker to grab a table.
The menu has a variety of sweet coffee drinks, and classic, sweet-free options are also available. A handful of sandwiches and an avocado toast will hit the spot if you’re craving lunch.
The café opens early—5:00 am on weekdays!—and stays open until 5:00 pm. I consider that late hours for a coffee shop in these parts, and I appreciate them!
My Take on Con Azucar Café #
The Food: So far, I’ve had two sandwiches at Con Azucar, and they were gigantic!
The club sandwich was especially tall, which I expect for a club. But I didn’t expect the amount of deli meat this one delivered! The ham and the turkey were at least an inch thick each—I could hardly hold a whole half. Honestly, I enjoyed the sandwich more when I pulled half the meat off.
The torta de jamon was also massive, but not overwhelmingly so, at least from a vertical viewpoint.
This is the first time I’ve seen a torta made with deli meat. It also had pickled jalapenos, queso fresco and pepperjack, avocado, lettuce, and tomato. Still a lot of sandwich! But it felt more approachable. Whatever sandwich you get at Con Azucar, it’s best to split it unless you’re really, really hungry.
The Drinks: I learned from the barista that the duvalin iced latte comes with a strawberry cold foam. I asked if I could add the cold foam to an iced coffee instead, as I’m not big on drinking tons of milk. They delivered!
I quite liked the fresh fruit taste of that drink. On the same trip, I ended up with a free mazapan latte when someone else’s order went wrong.
Mazapan is a peanut butter paste popular in Mexican baking. The flavor was nice, but was indeed, for me, too much milk. If you’re more about the milk than the coffee, it’s a good choice with a subtle peanut presence.
On another trip, I opted for a coffee-forward beverage, choosing the shaken brown sugar espresso. The barista warned me that it wouldn’t be as sweet as other drinks, and I had to let her know that that was precisely why I was ordering it.
I still laughed when I received it, though—so much milk! Oat milk, in this case, which I much prefer over dairy, but still, the coffee was more of an afterthought than star player. I guess I expected at least a 50/50 ratio milk to espresso? I enjoyed it more than the mazapan latte, but not as much as the duvalin iced coffee I’d had before.
Would I Go Back? Yes! Con Azucar Café is an excellent addition to downtown Hayward. We do have a few fancy cafés already, but none of them have the amount of seating as Con Azucar, and the existing options are Vietnamese and Taiwanese twists on coffee rather than Mexican ones. Plus, I still want to try their café de olla and horchata options before I decide to stick with iced americanos for future visits. It’s always nice to have the option of sweeter treats, on the occasions when I crave one.
